What writing in a journal for 5 years did for me

I wrote a journal for 5 years... but did it actually help?

I've always loved stationary and organisation - from notebooks, to pens, sticky notes and highlighters.

Highlighters were my favourite in school. My best friend and I had a set each in rainbow and we would cover our entire school diaries in rainbows and anything we highlighted in class, was in rainbow coloured order.

We even got in trouble for our diaries having too much drawings over - but we thought it was art!

I always wanted to be one of those cool kids that brought a diary with them everywhere and 'journaled', so I did.

I bought myself a Kiki.k diary one year and started writing in it every single day.

I wasn't journalling like a "Dear Diary" vibe, I basically just noted down things I did that day.

I'd write "gym", "got coffee with friend", "went for walk with dad".

I bought that same Kiki.K diary, EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR, for 5 years and did the same exact thing.

2 things I've realised since then - bare in mind this was about 5 years ago that I finished my last diary.

Firstly, I never ever went back through those diaries. I think I prefer to look at my life ahead rather than reminiscing too much on the past.

Secondly, I think writing a journal or diary, is more about the current moment and getting your thoughts and feelings out, right now, and it doesn't really matter about looking back on it, it's more a task in the present that feels good.

Dear Diary, I won't be writing another diary every again!

Although, I still am a lover of all things Kiki.K and you'll always find me buying notebooks and sticky notes from there.
